Sports Illustrated Is Still Capable Of Top-Notch Writing

Sports Illustrated can be a fairly boring publication (I think this is the year the subscription finally goes buh-bye), but every so often they manage to do something truly excellent.  Case in point: S.L. Price’s remarkable story on the death of Mike Coolbaugh and the effect his passing has had on both his family and the man who hit the ball that killed him.

A Death in the Baseball Family

I first saw it mentioned on a blog last night (sorry, I forget where) and again on The Big Lead today, so when the magazine arrived I decided to open it up and give it a read.  It almost brought me to tears more than once.

So if you have a few minutes and want to read a great piece of writing, click on that link above.  You won’t be disappointed.

  1. Gentlemen, another great idea for a blog.

Regarding the SI piece, they did a really good one years ago about the widows of former Indians Steve Olin and Tim Crews. I wonder if its the same author.

The first place I saw this was Bugs and Cranks. Credit Deadspin for the reminder.
