Speaking of the Independent Leagues, you may remember that 38-year-old Jose Offerman attacked an opposing pitcher with his bat after being plunked in the leg. He is now pleading not guilty to the charges, and is scheduled to return to court on October 17th.
Offerman, who is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, charged the mound after he was hit with a pitch while batting for the Long Island Ducks on Aug. 14. He was accused of hitting two Bridgeport Bluefish players and indefinitely suspended the next day.
During the ensuing melee, Bluefish catcher John Nathans sustained a concussion and pitcher Matt Beech broke a finger on his non-throwing hand.
Now, I’m no legal expert, but how does one claim “not guilty” when photos like the one accompanying this article are circulating? Not to mention the paying fans who witnessed the whole thing. And, considering that Offerman hit the first pitch out of the park that night, he can’t claim that it was an accident – he clearly hits what he means to hit.
We’ll keep an eye on this one for you.
