Blue Jays, Fisher Cats Extend For Four More Years

One of the places I plan on taking in a few games this season is Manchester, New Hampshire’s Merchantsauto.com Stadium (a terrible name for a nice place to watch a game), home of the Eastern League’s New Hampshire Fisher Cats.  Though 2008 will be the team’s fifth season in the Granite State and its fourth at “The Merch”, I’ve only managed to make the fifteen minute trip north on Route 3 to watch one game.  And it was pouring that day.  On the plus side, the ticket was free.  Who can argue with free stuff?

Despite the name, the Fisher Cats are now and always have been the AA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, placing them in an interesting and well-documented geographical situation: quite simply, they are surrounded by the Red Sox and their affiliates, not to mention a pesky independent team right down the road.  This was viewed as something of a curse at first, as was the fact that the team begins its season in New Hampshire in April, with its hit-and-miss weather patterns, but the Fisher Cats have done alright for themselves so far: in 2007, the team drew more than 370,000 fans.

Thanks to that success in the middle of enemy territory, the Blue Jays have chosen to extend its player development contract with the Fisher Cats for another four seasons.  As noted by The Union Leader’s Kevin Gray (see the above link), this guarantees that the I-90 shuttle between Manchester and Toronto will remain well-traveled through at least 2012.
