Spotlight on A Ball – 4/7/2008

Confession time: I am a Kansas City Royals fan. I haven’t lived in Kansas for more than a decade, but I’m one of those loyal die-hards who roots for his team through thick & thin (and thin, and thin). The Royals have tried to survive at the MLB-level by bringing in late-career retreads like Juan Gonzalez and Mark Grudzielanek for years – a strategy which has not really worked. But the farm system has given me some hope that high draft picks might eventually build a team that is capable of contending in the AL Central.

One player who will hopefully take the express lane to the majors┬áto join Alex Gordon and Billy Butler is Mike Moustakas, a California-born Shortstop taken first in the 2007 amateur draft. After playing 11 games for the Rookie-level Idaho Falls Chukars, and knocking in 10 RBIs in that short time, Moustakas was deemed ready to be the starting SS for the low-A Burlington Bees (Get Stung by the Fun!). The kid has struggled a bit in his first four games of A-Ball, hitting just .176 with one RBI, but this Royals fan hopes to see him join the┬áparent club sooner rather than later, before big money lures some of his fellow youngsters away from the Royals. We’ll keep an eye on him on the Zimmmerman-o-meter, which will come your way on Thursday.

Local newspaper are writing a lot of odes to baseball these days, since very little action is in the books. Here’s one Davenport-area paper getting revved up for another season with the Quad Cities River Bandits (Cardinals). [Quad City Times]

Over in Bergen, New Jersey, everyone seems to want minor-league baseball, but nobody seems to know how to make it happen. [New York Times Regional]

In assessing their minor-league system, the Red Sox see potential at every level, including A-ball. Get the scoop in this article from the franchises’ northern outpost. [New Hampshire Union-Leader]

And, to cap things off, a blogger takes a look at Coveleski Stadium, home of the South Bend Silver Hawks (Diamondbacks). This is a nice look at the stadium, including photos and an assessment of the accomodations. [Confessions of a Sports Junkie]

AA-ball will be in the spotlight on Wednesday. Get out and enjoy a game near you!
