Welcome To The Bus Leagues, Mr. Beckham; Please Enjoy Your Stay

Of all the things in this article about Tim Beckham, the high school shortstop who was selected first overall by the Tampa Bay Rays in the MLB draft just about two weeks ago, the one that shocks me the most – I actually had to go back and reread it a couple times, just to make sure it said what I thought it said – is the fact that Beckham gave up baseball for three years at one point before his brother Jeremy, who was also drafted by Tampa Bay (in the 17th round) and assigned to the same minor league affiliate, inspired him to play again.

Wrap your mind around that: this kid is eighteen years old and he’s already good enough at baseball that he can take a three year sabbatical, go shoot some hoops, and still wind up as the number one overall selection in the draft.

The Brothers Beckham will play together at Tampa Bay’s Rookie League affiliate in Princeton, West Virginia.  Jeremy, a slightly built second baseman from Georgia Southern, is actually there already; he went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts in his professional debut on Thursday.  Tim is expected to join him this weekend and make his own debut later in the week.
