Tonkin Dominates The Gulf (Coast League)

Twins minor leaguer Michael Tonkin, a pitcher in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, had himself a nice game last night, allowing two hits and striking out a career-high fifteen in seven innings against the GCL Red Sox.

Where this game came from, I don’t know (although the fact that four Red Sox batters had batting averages below the Mendoza Line probably helped) – Tonkin only had 17 strikeouts in 22.2 career innings prior to last night.

Four fun points: Tonkin didn’t walk a batter; he struck out seven in a row in the second, third and fourth innings; the only Sox player who didn’t strike out was shortstop Jose Garcia; and Tonkin gave up only two hits, both of them triples.

MiLB.com’s inning-by-inning recap of Tonkin’s performance is after the jump.

  2. I would call him Grand Moff Tonkin. Not exact, but close enough.
