File This One Under, “The NCAA Is Stupid”

The story of the Fort Myers Miracle and their scheduled “What Would Tim Tebow Do?” promotion has been all over the internet for the past few days.  Basically, the team had planned the promotion for months, only to receive a cease and desist email on the morning of the event.

I probably would’ve let it pass without comment, but this snippet of the email, published by USA Today, made me reconsider:

“Under NCAA rules, it is not permissible to use the name or picture of a student-athlete in the promotion of a commercial product or service,” said the letter, written by Florida senior associate athletic director Jamie McCloskey and copied to Florida coach Urban Meyer. “Failure to abide by this rule would result in the student-athlete being ruled ineligible.”

Translation: “Hey, you are not allowed to make money by using the name or image of this fine, upstanding, amateur student-athlete.  Only we’re allowed to do that.”

The NCAA should just come clean, admit that it’s a professional league, and be done with it.  Or at least begin offering “Professional Sports” as a major.

Mexican League Finals All Tied Up at Two

After Saltillo took the first two games of the Mexican League finals from Quintana Roo over the weekend, it appeared the Saraperos were in good position to win the team’s first championship since 1980.

El Tigres, however, have clawed their way back into it. After an off day on Monday, they’ve taken two in a row to tie the series heading into tonight’s pivotal Game Five.

If Saltillo wants to bounce back, they’ll need to find some offensive help for Jesus Cota. Cota is hitting his stride a[ the right time, homering in all four games thus far in the finals, but his longball in Game Four accounted for the only Saraperos run.

Update: Saltillo leads, 8-4, in the top of the seventh.
