Gerson No-Hits DSL Cubs, Strikes Out Eleven

Starlin Gerson has pitched some pretty good games for the Dominican Summer League Reds this season, including an eighteen day stretch in late June and early July where he allowed ten hits in 21.1 innings while striking out 28.

As good as that run was, he managed to outdo it on Monday, completely shutting down the DSL Cubs with a complete game, nine-inning no-hitter. Only three batters reached base against the 20-year-old righty (one on a fifth inning error, two on sixth inning walks), who struck out eleven. His game score was a whopping 96.

A no-hitter is impressive in any league, but it’s an even greater achievement in the DSL, where the age and rawness of the players means that complete games and shutouts are rare commodities. Gerson’s gem was just the 22nd complete game in the league this season, his shutout the ninth.

(Remember Felix Cespedes, the DSL Phillies pitcher who pitched nine perfect innings with fourteen strikeouts and got a no decision? I just stumbled upon him again and couldn’t believe his next game – seven innings, one hit, nine strikeouts. Dude is eighteen-years-old. He is now bookmarked.)
